Mailing and Commissary Information

Family and friends can communicate with inmates held at the Essex County Correctional Facility by following specific mail regulations. Essex County uses a digitized mail delivery system for personal and non-privileged correspondence. All personal mail is processed through a mail center and converted to digital format before being delivered to the inmate.

Physical letters and cards should be mailed to the facility’s designated mail processing address, not the facility address. Inmates are allowed to send and receive an unlimited number of letters. There are no restrictions on the length, language, or context of letters or to whom an inmate may write, except when there is a clear threat to the institution.

All incoming mail, letters, and parcels will be examined by Correctional Facility officials for cash, checks, money orders, and contraband, but will not be read except when deemed a threat to the security of the institution or suspected of being used for illegal activity. Mail from an attorney or the court is considered privileged and must be labeled as Legal Mail on the envelope. Such mail will be opened in the presence of the inmate to ensure confidentiality. Inmates are permitted to receive soft-covered books, magazines, newspapers, or other printed matter, but these must be mailed directly from the publisher or a reputable bookstore. Hardcover books are not permitted. Here is the mailing format for personal mail to an Essex County inmate:
